Wright Ousts Slater During ASP World Title Shake-Up at Rip Curl Pro Search

The heat was an extremely tight affair with Slater opening up with solid scores on both his forehand and backhand while his younger opponent waited patiently. Wright’s progressive forehand arsenal was put to use in the punchy lefthanders, threading barrels and stomping air reverses to come within striking distance of the champ. Needing a solid score with time winding down, Wright pulled into a lengthy left barrel to score a 7.73 out of a possible 10 to take the lead and the heat win.

Sadly, Tiago Pires was eliminated on the first round of the Billabong Pro’09 in Tahiti. He lost to the autralian Josh Kerr with a score of 15.50 against Tiago’s 11.03. Although Tiago surfed the best wave, a 9.10 this wasn’t enough to beat Josh. Tiago didn’t manage to get a good second wave, the best being a 1.93 on the other side, Josh managed to surf a 8.83 wave followed by a 6.67 and it was enough to move along for the third heat.
